Abstract

The article presents the relevance of the study of procrastination as a stable personal property in the conditions of dynamic socio-economic development of society. The main directions of studying this phenomenon within the limits of psychological knowledge are indicated. The difficulties of operationalization of the concept that lead to terminological confusion are covered. The necessity of forming a clear and unbiased position of scientists regarding the relation of the term "procrastination" with other constructs, which indicate the propensity of the individual to dilateral behavior, is substantiated. The views of scientists regarding the connotation of the term "procrastination" are analyzed in detail. The theoretical generalizations formulated on this basis indicate that this concept covered by both dysfunctional and functional aspects of the individual's dilatory behavior, and is therefore much broader in content than the concept of procrastination. After all, the definition of procrastination was put into scientific circulation solely to explain the destructive form of delaying cases. In addition, the authors analyzed the relationship of the studied concept with the constructs of laziness, allergy, acrasion, and asthenia. According to these results of the theoretical generalization, there was a discrepancy between scientists' views on this issue. Most of them state the conceptual intersection of these phenomena, which is the basis for assuming their synonymous.

On the other hand, a number of scholars note the existence of differences, which confirms the expediency of positioning these terms as interrelated, but not identical. The prospect of further research, in the context of the outlined topics, is to empirically test two of these hypotheses using valid diagnostic tools.
