Abstract

Purpose. The article presents the results of an empirical study of the connection between coping strategies in conflict, used by lawyers, with indirect indicators of their mental health and professional success; as well as a comparison of these indicators for lawyers with different length of service, intensity of work and professional success. The aim of the article was to analyze the lawyer's psychological readiness to resolve conflicts that occur in his professional activity as a factor in his mental health in the workplace.

Methods. Questionnaires and psychodiagnostic test methods were used to collect primary data: N.Hall "Emotional Intelligence"; J. Rotter's Locus of Control; M. Lazarus - to identify coping strategies of the individual in the conflict and K. Thomas - to identify the dominant strategy of behavior in the conflict.

Results. The correlation between the professional performance of lawyers and internality in the areas of professional achievement and health, as well as emotional intelligence has been identified. As a lawyer's experience and success increases, emotional awareness and the ability to regulate one's emotions increase, which prevents emotional and professional burnout. The lack of significant correlations between a lawyer's success and his coping strategies shows that the strategies of successful lawyers are flexible and can change. Increasing work experience does not encourage a lawyer to choose a single coping strategy. Statistical comparisons showed the dynamics of such a coping strategy as "taking responsibility". As the length of professional activity increases to 15 years, the share of this strategy decreases. But it’s  growing again among lawyers with more than 15 years of experience. A comparison of lawyers with high and low levels of professional success showed that this strategy is used by successful lawyers, but with some limitations.

Conclusions. Increasing the length of service and success of a lawyer's professional activity is accompanied by increased emotional awareness, self-regulation, internality in the areas of professional activity and mental health. The coping strategy "Acceptance of Responsibility" (potentially stressful) is most often used by novice lawyers (unsuccessfully because it causes a gradual abandonment of it) and mature professionals (in combination with other strategies).
